UK Roaming Charges (2026): EE, Vodafone, Three and O2 Compared, Plus Cheaper eSIM Options
UK roaming charges came back after Brexit, and today most big UK networks charge around £2 to £2.50 a day to use your allowance in Europe. On a two-week holiday that is roughly £30 to £35, and on a winter stay abroad it can reach hundreds of pounds. This guide compares UK roaming charges on EE, Vodafone, Three and O2, and shows when a travel eSIM is the cheaper option.
The figures below are the standard rates for recent pay-monthly plans. Prices usually change every April and depend on when you joined, so always confirm the current rate in your network’s app before you travel.
UK Roaming Charges in Europe: Network by Network
Here is how the main networks compare for roaming in the EU, based on MoneySuperMarket’s roaming guide. Older plans may have different terms, and some premium plans include roaming at no extra cost.
| Network | EU Daily Charge | Fair Use |
|---|---|---|
| EE | About £2.47 a day, or a 30-day pass | 50 GB |
| Vodafone | About £2.42 a day, or 8 and 15-day passes | 25 GB on Xtra plans |
| Three | About £2 a day (Go Roam in Europe) | 12 GB |
| O2 | No daily charge | 25 GB |
| Sky Mobile | About £2 a day | 25 GB |
| giffgaff | No daily charge | 5 GB |
Several smaller networks, including iD Mobile, SMARTY, Lebara and Tesco Mobile, still include EU roaming without a daily fee, within a fair use limit. If you are on one of these, UK roaming charges may not be a problem for short trips.
EE Roaming Charges
EE charges a daily fee for EU roaming on plans started since July 2021. The fee applies on every day you use your phone abroad, even if you only receive a single text that triggers a data session.
EE also sells a 30-day Roam Abroad pass, which is much cheaper than paying the daily rate for a long trip. If you are on EE and travel often, compare the pass with a travel eSIM before each trip.
Vodafone Roaming Charges
Vodafone splits destinations into zones. Most European countries fall into a zone with a daily charge on standard plans, while some Xtra plans include European roaming.
Vodafone also sells 8-day and 15-day European roaming passes. These work out cheaper than the daily rate on a typical holiday.
Three Roaming Charges
Three charges a daily fee for Go Roam in Europe on pay-monthly plans started or upgraded since October 2021. Its fair use limit of 12 GB is lower than EE and O2, which matters if you stream or work from your phone.
O2 Roaming Charges
O2 is the main UK network that still includes EU roaming without a daily fee. You can use your allowance in Europe up to a 25 GB fair use limit.
That makes O2 a strong choice for frequent travellers in Europe. Outside Europe, O2 and every other UK network charge much more, and that is where a travel eSIM saves the most.
What UK Roaming Charges Cost on a Real Trip
Two weeks in Spain: at about £2.47 a day, EE’s daily rate adds roughly £35 to your bill. A Vodafone 15-day pass or a small Saily Europe plan costs less if you mainly use maps and messaging.
A three-month winter stay: paying a daily fee for 90 days would cost over £200. A 30-day network pass or a long Holafly plan brings that down sharply, and Holafly includes unlimited data for the whole stay.
A trip outside Europe: UK roaming charges for Turkey, Thailand, Dubai or the United States are often several times higher than the EU rate. A travel eSIM is almost always cheaper for these destinations.
How a Travel eSIM Avoids UK Roaming Charges
A travel eSIM is a digital SIM you install on your phone before you fly. It gives you mobile data from a local partner network, while your UK SIM stays in the phone for calls and texts.
You turn on data roaming for the eSIM line only, and turn it off for your UK SIM. Because your UK line uses no data abroad, most networks do not charge the daily roaming fee, but check your network’s rules on calls and texts.

Saily for short trips, Holafly for unlimited data on longer stays
Saily vs Holafly: Which eSIM Beats UK Roaming Charges?
Saily is the cheaper choice for light data users and short trips. Its Europe plan covers 35 countries, including Turkey, from US$3.99, and it includes an ad blocker that stretches your data further.
Holafly is the better choice for long stays and heavy use. Every plan includes unlimited data, with Europe plans from US$19.50 for 5 days up to US$139.90 for 90 days.

UK Roaming Charges Outside Europe
Outside the EU, UK roaming charges rise sharply. Popular destinations such as Turkey, the UAE, Thailand and the United States sit in higher-priced zones on most networks, with daily rates several times the EU fee.
Turkey catches many holidaymakers out, because it feels close to Europe but is not in the EU roaming zone on most UK plans. Saily’s Europe plan includes Turkey, so one eSIM can cover a trip that combines Greece and Turkey.
For long-haul trips, see our guides to the best eSIM for Thailand and the eSIM for Dubai. In these destinations a travel eSIM usually costs a fraction of UK roaming charges.
UK Roaming Charges for Expats Living Abroad
UK mobile plans are designed for people who live in the UK and travel occasionally. Most networks have fair use rules that let them add charges or restrict roaming if you spend more time abroad than in the UK over a set period.
That matters for retirees who winter in Spain or expats who have moved abroad for good. Relying on UK roaming long term can lead to surcharges or warning messages from your network.
A better setup is a low-cost UK plan to keep your number for bank codes, plus a travel eSIM or local SIM for data in your new country. Our guide to keeping your UK number abroad compares the cheapest ways to do this.
When You Do Not Need an eSIM
A travel eSIM is not always the cheapest option, and it is worth being honest about that. If you are on O2, iD Mobile, SMARTY or another network with included EU roaming, your plan may already cover a short European trip.
A network roaming pass can also be good value on a long European stay. The eSIM wins clearly when you travel outside Europe, use more data than your fair use limit, or want to stop paying daily fees without changing your UK contract.
How to Avoid Surprise UK Roaming Charges
Check your plan before you fly. Your network’s app shows whether roaming is included, the daily rate and any passes. Rates usually rise in April, so check again each year.
Turn off data roaming on your UK SIM. If you use a travel eSIM, make sure your UK line cannot use data abroad. One background app update is enough to trigger a daily charge.
Use spending caps. UK networks must offer a monthly cap on roaming data spending, and the UK regulator Ofcom publishes guidance on using your phone abroad. Keep the cap switched on unless you have a good reason to remove it.
UK Roaming Charges and Your Online Banking
Many travellers keep their UK SIM active only because their bank sends security codes by text. That is a good reason to keep the UK line on, but it does not mean you need to pay for UK data abroad.
Receiving texts while roaming is usually free in the EU on most networks, while data triggers the daily fee. A VPN with UK servers also helps UK banking apps work smoothly on foreign connections, and NordVPN pairs naturally with Saily because both come from Nord Security.
Our Verdict on UK Roaming Charges
UK roaming charges of around £2 to £2.50 a day add up quickly on longer trips and hit hardest outside Europe. If your network charges a daily fee, a travel eSIM for data is usually the simplest way to cut the bill while keeping your UK number.
Choose Saily for short trips and light use, and Holafly for unlimited data on long stays. If you are on O2 or a network with included roaming, use your allowance in Europe and keep an eSIM for trips further afield.
