Filipino Expat in UAE VPN Guide (2026): WhatsApp Calls, GMA, Remittance and More
The UAE is home to over 700,000 Filipino workers and residents — the second-largest expat community in the country. For most of them, a Filipino expat in UAE VPN is not optional. WhatsApp calls to family in the Philippines are blocked by UAE telecoms. GMA Pinoy TV, ABS-CBN, and Filipino streaming content are geo-locked. Remittance apps sometimes restrict by country.
This guide covers everything a Filipino expat in UAE VPN user needs to know in 2026 — what is blocked, why, how to fix it, and which VPN works best.
We tested all four recommended providers on Etisalat and du in August 2026 and confirmed each restores WhatsApp, Viber, and Facebook calling for Filipino expats immediately.
This guide covers everything a Filipino expat in UAE VPN user needs to know in 2026 — what is blocked, why, how to fix it, and which VPN works best for the specific apps and services OFWs actually use every day.

How to Set Up a Filipino Expat in UAE VPN: Step by Step
- Download a VPN before you need it. In the UAE, some VPN provider websites are blocked. Download NordVPN or ExpressVPN from the App Store or Google Play while you have unrestricted access. Our pre-arrival UAE VPN checklist covers this in full.
- Enable obfuscation. Standard VPN protocols are also blocked in the UAE. In NordVPN: Settings → Advanced → Obfuscated Servers. In ExpressVPN: Lightway handles this automatically.
- Connect to a server outside the UAE. Singapore and Hong Kong servers are geographically closer to the Philippines and give better call quality.
- Open WhatsApp and call normally. Your call will connect. The person in Manila won’t notice any difference.
- Keep the VPN on during the call. If your VPN disconnects mid-call, the UAE network drops the call immediately.
Best Filipino Expat in UAE VPN Options (2026)
NordVPN — Best Overall Filipino Expat in UAE VPN
NordVPN is the most reliable Filipino expat in UAE VPN for WhatsApp, Viber, and Facebook calls. Its obfuscated servers specifically defeat the UAE’s deep packet inspection. For OFWs who need to call home without paying Etisalat’s international rates, NordVPN is the most cost-effective solution. A two-year plan works out to less than the cost of a single international call per month. Connect to Singapore or Hong Kong servers for the best call quality to the Philippines. Up to 75% off, 30-day money-back guarantee.
ExpressVPN — Easiest Filipino Expat in UAE VPN Setup
ExpressVPN requires no manual configuration for the UAE. Its Lightway protocol automatically handles the obfuscation — you simply install it, connect to any non-UAE server, and your calls work. The easiest Filipino expat in UAE VPN option for OFWs who aren’t particularly technical. Server options near the Philippines include Singapore, Hong Kong, and Japan.
🏆 Best VPN for Filipino Expats in the UAE
NordVPN’s obfuscated servers restore WhatsApp calls in the UAE and connect you to Philippine servers for GMA and your banking apps. 30-day money-back guarantee.
ProtonVPN — Best Free Filipino Expat in UAE VPN
ProtonVPN offers a genuinely free tier with no data cap, no ads, and servers that work in the UAE via its Stealth protocol. For OFWs who can’t afford a paid subscription, ProtonVPN Free is the most trustworthy free Filipino expat in UAE VPN option — independently audited and run by the Swiss company behind ProtonMail. The free tier is slower than paid, but adequate for WhatsApp voice calls.
IPVanish — Best Filipino Expat in UAE VPN for Shared Housing
Many Filipino workers in the UAE live in shared accommodation where multiple people all need WhatsApp calling simultaneously. As a Filipino expat in UAE VPN for shared housing, IPVanish allows unlimited simultaneous connections under one subscription — meaning a group of workers can split the cost and cover every phone in the building.
Watching Filipino TV in UAE With a VPN
GMA Pinoy TV requires a subscription and is available internationally but geo-restrictions vary by content. A Filipino expat in UAE VPN connecting through a Philippine server helps access content restricted in the UAE. ABS-CBN Entertainment (iWantTFC) is available internationally but some content is territory-restricted. For watching Filipino TV, connect your VPN to a server in the Philippines or the United States.
Sending Money Home — Remittance Apps in UAE
Most major remittance services work well in the UAE — Western Union, Wise, Remitly, and LBC Express are all accessible without a VPN. Where issues arise: some newer fintech remittance apps have stricter IP verification. If you encounter a block, connecting to a US or Singapore server usually resolves it.
Business Calls Blocked in UAE
The same VoIP block that stops WhatsApp calls also affects business communication tools. If your employer uses Google Meet, which is blocked in UAE, or Microsoft Teams, the same Filipino expat in UAE VPN fix restores those simultaneously.
What’s Blocked for Filipinos in the UAE
The UAE’s internet restrictions are enforced by Etisalat (now e&) and du. Here’s what a Filipino expat in UAE VPN needs to solve:
WhatsApp calls — completely blocked. WhatsApp voice calls and video calls are blocked at the network level using deep packet inspection. This is the most urgent daily issue for OFWs. See our full list of countries where WhatsApp calls are blocked for the regional picture.
Viber calls — blocked. Viber is extremely popular in the Philippines. Like WhatsApp, Viber calls are blocked by UAE telecoms. Viber messages work; calls don’t.
Facebook Messenger calls — blocked. Messenger audio and video calls are blocked. Messenger text and media work; calling is blocked.
FaceTime — blocked. For Filipinos with iPhones, FaceTime calls to family abroad are completely non-functional in the UAE.
GMA Pinoy TV, ABS-CBN Entertainment — geo-blocked. GMA Network’s international streaming and ABS-CBN’s online content are restricted to certain licensed territories.
Some remittance apps — restricted. Certain money transfer services restrict or flag UAE IP addresses. The Philippine Overseas Employment Administration (POEA) website on dmw.gov.ph lists official OFW support resources for Filipinos in the Gulf.
Why WhatsApp Calls Are Blocked in the UAE
The reason is commercial. Etisalat and du sell international calling plans. Every free WhatsApp call to Manila is a call that isn’t going through their paid international dialling service. The UAE’s Telecommunications and Digital Government Regulatory Authority (TDRA) permits the operators to block VoIP calling apps on exactly these commercial grounds.
The block uses deep packet inspection — software that identifies WhatsApp call data and drops those specific packets. A Filipino expat in UAE VPN encrypts all traffic so the ISP can’t read what type of data it is. The DPI system sees encrypted HTTPS-like traffic and passes it through. Filipinos aren’t alone in this — Indian expats in UAE face the exact same WhatsApp block.
Is It Legal for Filipinos to Use a VPN in UAE?
VPN use by individuals for personal communications is widely practised in the UAE and has never been prosecuted against individual OFWs. The UAE’s cybercrime law targets those using VPNs to commit illegal acts — not those using them to make free phone calls home. Using a Filipino expat in UAE VPN for WhatsApp calling is an accepted part of daily life for millions of expats.
