Why RTÉ Player Is Blocked in the US
RTÉ holds broadcast rights for its content only within the Republic of Ireland. When you connect to the internet in the United States, your internet provider (Comcast, AT&T, Verizon, Spectrum, or any other) assigns you an American IP address. RTÉ Player detects this US IP address and blocks access to live channels and the catch-up archive.
This is the same rights management system that makes Hulu US-only and BBC iPlayer UK-only. It is not a deliberate targeting of the Irish diaspora — it is standard broadcasting law. The international version of the RTÉ Player website is accessible from the US, but it has a very limited catalogue compared to the domestic version. Live channels like RTÉ One, RTÉ2, and RTÉ News are not available on the international site.
A VPN routes your internet connection through a server in Ireland, giving you an Irish IP address. RTÉ Player then sees an Irish viewer and grants full access to everything. That is how you watch RTÉ Player in the US with full content access.
